Who Qualifies for a VA Loan?

To qualify for a VA loan, borrowers must meet service and eligibility criteria established by the Department of Veterans Affairs. These criteria are based on time in service, the type of service, and discharge conditions.

General service requirements for VA loan eligibility include:

  • Active Duty During Wartime: 90 consecutive days of service.
  • Active Duty During Peacetime: 181 consecutive days of service.
  • National Guard or Reserves: Six years of service, or 90 days under Title 32 orders (with at least 30 consecutive days served).

Eligible groups for VA loans:

  • Veterans: Must have completed required active-duty service and received a discharge other than dishonorable.
  • Active-Duty Service Members: Current personnel actively serving in the military.
  • National Guard and Reserve Members: Eligibility requires six years of service or 90 days of active-duty service during wartime.
  • Surviving Spouses: Spouses of service members who died in the line of duty or from a service-related injury may also qualify for VA loan benefits.
